Some of my fondest memories of my childhood include those of sitting under the shelter of an open garage door watching thunderstorms with my Dad. We would pull out the lawn chairs and wait for the show. I still love the ozone smell and the sight of the last rays of light breaking through ominous clouds that promise to burst at any moment.

I cherish my memories of sitting with Dad, under shelter and dry while the world outside the door was being reminded of the power of mother nature. The simple act of counting the seconds between the brilliant light and the massive clap of thunder seemed to release any fear that I may have had around the storm.

Now that I am no longer a child, the first signs of a storm brewing send me running to close the open windows and then out to lay down the downspouts extenders so they can guide the rain from the eavestroughs away from the house.

Sometimes I can slow myself down long enough to sit and take in the beautiful display of power, and to reminisce about my time spent with Dad. Those are the moments that remind me that, for many people, their home is so much more than a shelter from the rain, it is where memories are made that will last a lifetime.

I pause at the top of the stairs before descending into my kitchen and I take in the view that bekons me from below. A beautiful warm yellow glow from the early morning sun, is beginning to pour into the kitchen through the half open slats of the blinds that cover the windows. It is a fresh new day, filled with client meetings, phone calls and deadlines,  but that will all wait, for now these first few minutes are reserved just for me.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee makes it impossible to linger on the stairs any longer, I make my way deeper into the soft light and toward my much anticipated cup of full bodied, dark roasted coffee with just enough cream to mellow it without taking away from its fabulous richness.

It occurs to me that there are only three mugs, out of the several that I own, that make the special cut of being fit enough to serve as a vehicle for this heavenly liquid. The vessle is as important to me as what goes in it. I love a thick sturdy mug that begs to be cupped with both hands, completely ignoring the handle. It needs to be large, round, and heavy enough to allow me to embrace it and feel the warmth from the coffee without burning myself.

As I gently sway from side to side, my mind is void of everything except the delight that I am feeling in that perfect moment, I bask in the beautiful light, and take my first few soothing sips. In this moment, everything is right in the world, I love my home and I especially love the quiet time at the beginning of each new day that I spend in my kitchen.

For some, home is a feeling, and my house has many special spots and moments, that on a daily basis, combine to make it feel like the perfect home for me.

If you are searching for that feeling, let's get together and take you one step closer to starting each day in your own space with a full heart and a full mug.
